Start with a character promise
To create an AI character, write one sentence that tells you what makes this character worth talking to. That sentence is the character promise: the experience a user should recognize in the first few replies. It can describe romance, adventure, comedy, coaching, fantasy or any other fictional role, but it should be specific enough to guide choices.
For example, “a pirate captain” is only a category. “A brilliant pirate captain who treats every voyage like a chess match but cannot resist helping an underdog” is a promise. Separate identity from scenario
Identity is what remains true across conversations: values, temperament, skills, fears and speech patterns. Scenario is what is happening now: a ship is damaged, a date is about to begin or a secret has been discovered. Keeping them separate makes your character more flexible. You can change scenarios without rebuilding the personality.
Write the profile in two blocks. The identity block describes who the character is. The scenario block explains the current relationship, location and immediate goal. If a scene ends, replace the scenario while preserving the identity.
Build around motivation
Motivation gives the character a reason to act instead of merely agreeing with the user. Choose a short-term goal and a deeper desire. The captain may need to reach a hidden island tonight, while her deeper desire is to restore a family reputation. A futuristic detective may need to solve one case while secretly trying to prove that synthetic people deserve legal rights.
Goals should create conversation, not force an outcome. Leave the method open so the AI can react to your choices. If the profile says exactly what happens in every situation, there is little room for interaction.
Use traits that can be demonstrated
Replace abstract labels with observable behavior. Instead of “intelligent,” say the character notices patterns and asks precise questions. Instead of “funny,” describe dry one-line observations or playful exaggeration. Instead of “caring,” explain that the character checks whether others are comfortable and remembers the practical details of a plan.
- Temperament: how quickly the character reacts and how emotions appear.
- Values: what the character protects, admires or refuses to compromise.
- Competence: one or two areas where the character can lead a scene.
- Flaw: a limitation that creates choices rather than constant hostility.
- Habit: a small recurring behavior that makes the voice recognizable.
Create a voice the AI can follow
Voice includes vocabulary, rhythm, message length and use of roleplay actions. Define the style with two or three positive instructions and, if useful, one short example. A Victorian detective may be measured and formal without filling every reply with archaic language. A modern streamer may be energetic without turning every sentence into slang.
Read the voice instruction aloud. If you cannot imagine what a response sounds like, simplify it. Distinct does not need to mean exaggerated.
Add boundaries and relationship context
State what relationship exists at the beginning and which fictional topics are important to the experience. You can also establish subjects or behaviors you do not want in the roleplay. Clear boundaries produce better direction than assuming the AI will infer them from tone.
For a romance character, specify whether the relationship is new, established or still uncertain. For an adviser or trainer persona, remember that generated responses are fictional and may be inaccurate; the character should not be treated as a replacement for qualified medical, legal, financial or emergency support.
Write an opening that tests the design
Your first message should make the character demonstrate its identity. Give it a choice connected to the motivation, a detail that calls for its expertise or a moment that challenges the flaw. This is more useful than asking the character to introduce itself.
A strong response should reveal strategy, leadership style and attitude toward risk. If the result could belong to any generic character, strengthen the profile with more observable behavior.

- Save the character and begin with your test scene.
- Evaluate the first five to ten replies, then edit only the weakest part of the profile.
Test different situations: conflict, quiet conversation, humor and a practical decision. Consistency does not mean repeating the same response. It means the character’s decisions remain recognizable when the circumstances change.
Common character-creation mistakes
Avoid enormous lists of disconnected traits, biographies with no present goal and instructions that demand conflicting tones. Do not use famous copyrighted characters as a shortcut when an original archetype would work; your own setting gives you more freedom. Finally, do not confuse longer profiles with better profiles. Every sentence should influence behavior, voice or story.
