Define the player roles

Before beginning, decide who the AI controls and who you control. Usually the AI plays one main companion while you write your own character. State the relationship between the main characters: strangers, rivals, partners, friends or an established fictional couple. Also state whether the characters know the world already. This prevents long explanations that would feel unnatural in the scene.

Give every main character a goal

Goals turn description into action. The AI companion might need to protect a secret, win a competition, repair a damaged relationship or reach a location before sunrise. Your character should want something too. The goals can align or conflict, but both participants need reasons to make choices.

Use goals that can evolve. “Find the missing letter” can lead to clues, distrust and new decisions. “Immediately reveal the letter and solve everything” ends the story before the chat begins.

Start as close to the decision as possible

Do not spend the first ten messages walking toward the event. Begin when something changes. The door opens, a deadline arrives, the power fails or a character says the line they have been avoiding. Include only enough background to understand why the moment matters.

You are the owner of a quiet hotel that appears in a different city every night. I am the only guest who remembers yesterday. At dawn, the lobby map reveals that tonight’s city no longer exists. You lock the front door and ask me what I changed.

This opening defines roles, world rule, mystery and immediate tension. The AI has several ways to respond without losing the premise.

Use the scene loop

A reliable roleplay turn contains three parts: react to the previous message, contribute one new detail and leave an opening. You do not need to label the parts. The pattern simply prevents messages from ignoring what happened or resolving the entire scene alone.

  • React: acknowledge an action, line or emotional change.
  • Contribute: add a clue, choice, obstacle or personal detail.
  • Open: stop before deciding how the other character responds.

The AI may introduce surprising ideas. Accept the ones that strengthen the premise, modify those that almost fit and redirect those that break an essential rule.

Redirect without restarting

When the story drifts, write a short correction followed by the next action. “The map is still on the desk and neither character has left the hotel. Continue from the moment the lights fail.” This is clearer than saying the answer was wrong. It restores location, state and momentum.

If tone drifts, describe the desired tone in observable terms: quieter dialogue, less comedy, slower romance or more attention to physical surroundings. Avoid vague requests such as “make it better.”

Manage continuity in longer sessions

AI systems do not provide perfect permanent memory. Keep essential facts compact and repeat them when a new chapter begins. A useful recap names the current location, the two most important discoveries, each character’s goal and the unresolved question. Do not include every line that has already occurred.

Chapter recap: We are still inside the moving hotel. We learned that the guest ledger predicts disappearances, and you admitted your family built the first version. I want to save tonight’s city; you want to destroy the ledger. Continue at dawn as the hotel begins to move.

Store permanent identity details in the custom character profile and temporary plot details in the chat.

Control pacing with scene changes

Slow scenes explore emotion and relationships; fast scenes create decisions and consequences. Alternate them. After an intense escape, allow a quiet conversation in a safe place. After several reflective turns, introduce a new event. Time jumps are useful when nothing important would happen between moments.

End a scene when the immediate question changes. Then state the new time and place clearly. This gives the roleplay structure without forcing a predetermined conclusion.

If a story touches on difficult personal subjects, maintain perspective and step away when needed. An entertainment app is not a substitute for real emergency or mental-health support.
