“Romantic” is too broad to define a character by itself. Think about how the relationship should feel. The emotional dynamic tells the AI how to interpret ordinary moments.
A useful concept sentence includes personality, relationship and setting: “A thoughtful but competitive chef who has been my best friend for years, set during the week before we open a restaurant together.” That sentence immediately suggests conversation topics, shared history and gentle tension.
2. Give him strengths and imperfections
Perfect characters tend to produce generic agreement. A believable AI boyfriend should have admirable qualities and harmless complications. He might be confident at work but awkward with sincere compliments, protective yet reluctant to ask for help, or charming in public while privately overthinking every decision.
- Choose two qualities you want to experience often, such as humor and patience.
- Add one strong motivation, such as proving himself, protecting a community or finishing a creative project.
- Add one tension that creates growth without making the chat unpleasant.
- Define what makes him feel comfortable enough to become more open.
Keep the traits compatible with the experience you want. If you are looking for relaxed conversation, a profile built entirely around conflict will work against that goal.
3. Create a backstory with shared context
Backstory is most effective when it connects the character to the present scene. Give him a place, occupation or passion, a recent challenge and an explanation of how you know each other. Shared context prevents the first chat from feeling like two strangers exchanging biographies.
You can create a new relationship, a first date, a long friendship or an established fictional partnership. Be explicit about the starting point. If the story begins after years of friendship, say what experiences you already share. If it is a first meeting, leave those memories open for the chat to create.
4. Decide how he communicates
Consider message length, humor, emotional openness and roleplay detail. A reserved character can still be engaging if his actions reveal what he does not say directly. A playful character can tease without turning every reply into a joke. Specify how he reacts when the scene becomes serious so the tone can change naturally.
Write instructions positively whenever possible. “He changes the subject with humor when embarrassed” is clearer than a long list of behaviors to avoid.
5. Open with a decision or surprise

The choice does not have to be dramatic: which route to take home, whether to attend an event, what to cook together or how to handle an unexpected message. The AI can respond with personality because the scene gives it something concrete to do.

Guide the chat without controlling every line
If the conversation becomes generic, restate one piece of context inside the scene. Mention where you are, what just happened or what you noticed in his reaction. If the tone moves too fast, communicate the pace you want directly: “Let’s keep this as playful tension for now” is more effective than repeatedly rejecting responses without guidance.
For longer roleplay, occasionally summarize the current goal in natural dialogue. Do not expect a companion to function as a perfect permanent record. Save important character notes in the profile when the creation tools allow it, and treat any generated detail as fictional rather than factual advice.
